Akebono scales are enharmonic equivalents of the sixth musical mode of a Major Scale (Aeolian mode or Natural Minor). These pentatonic scales have been used in traditional Japanese music and naturally create an exotic flow into your music with the scale degrees 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 of the Aeolian mode.
A typical Pygmy scale is an enharmonic equivalent of the sixth musical mode (Dorian Mode). Originating in African culture these are pentatonic scales having the arrangement Root - Maj 2nd - Min 3rd - 5th - Min 7th. Use of the Pygmy scale has grown hugely in popularity since the invention of the Hang by PANArt in Switzerland.

We love our babel drum! We bought it for our son's eighth birthday. The staff were so kind and moved heaven and earth to make sure it arrived in time for the big day. Thank you!
The drum is perfect for our son, who has profound and multiple learning difficulties. He enjoys it in so many different ways. He loves the sounds it makes and it is so easy for him to play, with his hands or with the drum sticks. It is so calming - every time we hear it, it's like being transported to a mysterious temple in the Ancient East. He loves the mirror finish, too, and is fascinated by the reflections he can see. He likes it that the metal feels cold to touch - on hot days in the summer he would lean his face against it and smile. As parents we love it that it is indestructible. What with one thing and another, a lot of things get broken in our house, but it is so solid that we can rest easy.
He's been taking it in to school for his music therapy sessions and it has been a real hit. The children have been mesmerised by the sounds and really keen to have a go themselves. Their music teacher thinks it is brilliant. As a learning tool it is very good, too. It is helping the children to improve their hand function, learn about cause and effect and it is motivating them to speak or communicate their requests.
In short, it's perfect - we are total converts and will be spreading the word!

My Iona Babel Drum is used for my work with older people who are living with Dementia. I use this as a sensory instrument for 1:1 hands-on work with people who have mental and physical health issues.
Visually engaging and beautiful sounding, this has been an immediate success. I recently heard an older lady saying to her friend, 'you should have a go on that spaceship, it's very relaxing!'
